Travel Question of the Day: Simon Calder on valid passports for the US

Q I am going on holiday to Florida in August. My passport was issued in 2010. I have heard I may need to get a new one because of the need to be biometric. Is that correct?
Ian Scott
A There has been concern in the past few months about some UK travellers being barred from the US because their passports did not contain a chip with biometric data. My understanding is that every British passport issued from 2007 onwards is an “e-passport” containing biometric information, and acceptable to the US authorities. The affected individuals were, as far as I know, all people who had obtained passports in 2006 that were the old type. So your passport should be valid for travel to the US up to and including the expiry date; there is no need to renew. Just make sure you get your Electronic System for Travel Authorization (Esta) approval in good time.

Qatar tourism receipts to reach $7.2 billion by 2025

Qatar’s tourism and hospitality industry is building momentum as it enters the second half of the decade, with an ambitious target of four million visitors by 2020, supported by US$40-45 billion worth of sector investment under the country’s National Tourism Sector Strategy 2030 plan.
The Gulf state returns to ATM this year to showcase its expanding hotel and tourism infrastructure pipeline following a successful 2015 with visitor numbers in the first nine months of 2014 growing to reach 2.2 million in quarter three, representing a year-on-year increase of 7.7 per cent, and booming air connectivity which saw Hamad International Airport exceed forecasted capacity of 30 million passengers last year.
According to a quarter three 2015 HVS report entitled In Focus: Doha, Tracking Progress, travel and tourism contributed US$4.2 billion – or two per cent - to the GDP in 2014, with a figure of US$4.6 billion forecast for 2015 (a rise of 7.3 per cent).
“Looking further ahead, this is expected to grow annually by 4.7 per cent, to reach US$7.2 billion in 2025 as Qatar works towards its strategic goal of positioning itself as a ‘world-class hub with deep cultural roots’, by creating a high profile product that will appeal to all market segments from cultural tourists and families to sports fans and business travellers,” said Nadege Noblet-Segers, exhibition manager, Arabian Travel Market.
Other third party officially released data revealed that, in quarter three 2015, GCC residents accounted for 45.2 per cent of total visitor numbers followed by visitors from Asia and Europe at 25.3 per cent and 13.9 per cent respectively.
The HVS report notes the addition of 11 new hotel properties with a total of 1,400 rooms to the market in 2015; as part of its commitment to reach 50,000 additional rooms by the 2022, when it will host the FIFA World Cup.
Kempinski Marsa Malaz Hotel, Banana Island Resort by Anantara and Melia Doha Hotel were a few of the brands to enter the market last year with Qatar Tourism Authority reporting an estimated 10,000 rooms currently under construction and expected to enter the market by 2018/9.
Official statistics tally current hotel room capacity at 17,900 keys, 84 per cent of which is four and five-star accommodation.
“As we are seeing in other GCC countries, an increasingly diversified tourism portfolio requires an equally broad hospitality offering, looking at both the luxury and mid-range categories, which is something that we are focusing on this year at ATM with midmarket travel our spotlight theme,” said Noblet-Segers.
“This is responding not only to the needs of the more budget-conscious traveller, but those for whom quality and experience-led travel doesn’t necessarily have to mean a five-star price tag,” she added.
According to the Reed Travel Exhibitions commissioned quarter three 2015 YouGov Travel Oracle insight report, one-third (36 per cent) of surveyed leisure travellers from the region now choose budget hotels when travelling for pleasure, with Asian expats the most likely to opt for low cost accommodation (52 per cent) and 35 per cent of all respondents stating that reasonable cost is one of the most important elements when considering a leisure destination.
Overall, 41 per cent of travellers interviewed had a per person trip budget of US$1,000 or less, thus putting cost high on the priority list.
The YouGov report also looked at business travel, with 15 per cent of total respondents reporting a decrease in corporate travel budget over the last 12 months, which is accordingly highlighting an opportunity for mid-level brands to target the newly budget-conscious corporate traveller.
The visibility of special deals/promotions when selecting a hotel for business travel was also raised in the research, with 18 per cent of those surveyed naming special offers as the top decision influencer followed by the influence of the company travel organiser (15 per cent).
The list of Qatari exhibitors at ATM 2016 include Katara Hospitality, Qatar Airways, Al Rayyan Hospitality, Qatar Tourism Authority and the Labbaik Group.
ATM 2016 will build on the success of this year’s edition with the announcement of an additional hall as Reed Travel Exhibitions looks to add to its record-breaking achievements earlier this year.
ATM 2015 witnessed a year-on-year visitor attendance increase of 15 per cent to over 26,000, with exhibiting companies increasing by five per cent to 2,873.

Travels: Universal-Exorcist, Eiteljorg, Toilets, LLBean

You'll Soon Have to "Submit DNA" to Enter Kuwait

Before the end of the year, visitors—as well as Kuwaitis, expats, and businessmen—to the Arab nation will need to submit a proper DNA sample before stepping foot in the country. Perhaps thankfully, the DNA sample only needs to be a swab of saliva or a few drops of blood as if entering the country be like making a “best friends forever” pact in fifth grade.
Officials insist the test will only be used “to fight crime and terrorism,” and in no way will the
country test for “lineage” or “medical” factors, nor will they infringe on any privacy—possibly said with a cough and a nudge.

Quito mayor Rodas urges tourists to visit city

Quito mayor Mauricio Rodas has urged international tourists to visit the city following an earthquake on the east coast of Ecuador.

Saying “the best way to help Ecuador is to visit Ecuador,” mayor Rodas has a simple message for the world: “Please visit us.”

He added: “We are relieved to be in such good condition, but our hearts go out to our fellow citizens at this time.

“The best way to assist in the recovery and rebuilding efforts is to embrace foreign visitors.”

Mayor Rodas confirmed that the city is safe.

Quito received only minor damage to some buildings in the city’s south end.

Old Quito is untouched.

Museums are open, hotels are open, restaurants are open, the airport is open, and flights are operating normally.

Tourism information booths at the airport and major attractions are open and ready to assist visitors.

“Tourism is a vital part of the Ecuadorean economy.

“For every foreign visitor, up to seven jobs are created.

“Now, more than ever, we need to open our doors, lay out a welcome mat, and enthusiastically promote all Ecuador has to offer,” said Rodas.

Potential tourists are being urged to keep their travel plans intact and hold off on cancelling.

“If you were considering a trip to the Amazon, the Andes or the Galapagos, we want you to visit.

“As the gateway to Ecuador, we welcome you with open arms.

“We need you to visit.

“The best way to help Ecuador is to visit Ecuador.”

Responsible tourism tops agenda in Dubai

Responsible tourism will headline several seminar theatre sessions at Arabian Travel Market 2016 as government legislation, increased focus on the traveller footprint and the impact of natural disasters on country economies put the spotlight on the importance of effective sustainable travel strategies.

In 2015, ATM welcomed over 50 exhibitors with a responsible tourism focus, and the number is set to grow this year.

Exhibitors including the ministry of tourism of Indonesia, Namibia Tourism Board, Gray Line and FHRI Hotels & Resorts join other hotel groups, tour operators, airlines and other industry sub-sectors are focusing additional resources on exploring new opportunities in responsible tourism.

According to certain industry commentators, responsible travel trends for 2016 include seeking out locally sourced food, traveller interest in the preservation of local culture and authentic experiences, ‘voluntourism’, pro-environmental hotel development and a significant focus on energy saving by operators as well as guests.

“More and more companies are re-evaluating their business model to incorporate responsible tourism products and programmes, and are using this as a tool to attract ethically and environmentally minded guests and clients as well as to support local government efforts or in response to legislated change,” said Nadege Noblet-Segers, exhibition manager, Arabian Travel Market.

ATM 2016: Kuwait forecast to invest $1bn in tourism sector

Investment into the travel and tourism sector in Kuwait is forecasted to grow by 4.3 per cent per annum over the next decade through to 2025, with a total investment figure of US$ 1 billion.

Kuwait’s strategy for long-term tourism growth received a boost in 2015, with airport passenger volume growing from around ten million travellers in 2014 to just over 10.2 million last year as the Gulf state ploughs ahead with plans to expand its transportation infrastructure.

According to a World Travel & Tourism Council report entitled ‘Kuwait Travel and Tourism Economic Impact 2015’, tourism accounted for 1.5 per cent of total GDP in 2015, and is set to rise by 0.3 per cent by 2025, although this is being revisited given the current low oil prices scenario.

This would take total GDP contribution to 1.8 per cent, or KWD1.6 billion in 2025.

The report also highlighted potential gains in leisure spend, which is expected to grow by 6.2 per cent per annum to KWD2.4 billion in 2025, while business travel is expected to grow by 5.6 per cent per annum to KWD457.3 million in 2025.

WTTC predictions put tourist arrivals at 440,000 by 2024 - up from 270,000 in 2014 – and increased capacity will be the catalyst for sector gains moving forward with leisure travel spending set to rise by 6.2 per cent per annum through to 2025, and business travel, which saw a dip in 2015, forecast to pick up in the next ten years with annual growth of 5.6 per cent.

Kuwait also has a high domestic travel spend component, which generated 88.1 per cent of direct tourism GDP in 2014, and is expected to increase by 6.4 per cent per annum through to 2025.

The country’s hotel pipeline is also adding new value to the tourism mix with an under-development collection of new luxury and more affordable accommodation options.

High-end brands such as Four Seasons, which will open its first 263-key Kuwait property at Burj Alshaya at the end of 2016, will be joined by the Mercure Kuwait (2017), Hilton Olympia Kuwait in 2019 and a Grand Hyatt in 2020.

It is also entering new mid-market territory with a number of upcoming projects including the 160-room Novotel Sharq (2017) and several Rotana properties, with a Centro Rotana set to debut in 2018 with 200 rooms.
